Auburn past and Present
Auburn is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, founded in 1714 as part of Worcester, Sutton, Leicester, and Oxford. It became a separate district in 1778, named Ward after General Artemas Ward, a Revolutionary War hero. In 1837, it changed its name to Auburn to avoid confusion with Ware. Auburn was the site of the first liquid-fueled rocket launch by Robert H. Goddard in 1926, which is commemorated by a park and a monument.
Auburn has a population of about 16,000 and is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. It has a diverse economy, with sectors such as education, health care, manufacturing, and retail. It also has many historic and cultural attractions, such as the Rider Tavern, the #2 Schoolhouse, the Buffumville Lake and Dam, and the Charlton Arts and Activities Center123
