South Hadley is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, that lies along the Connecticut River. It was settled in 1684 as part of Hadley, and became a separate town in 1775. It was named after Jeffrey Amherst, a British general in the French and Indian War. The city is home to Mount Holyoke College, one of the first institutions of higher learning for women in the U.S., founded by Mary Lyon in 1837.
