Shrewsbury
past and Present
Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, was officially incorporated on December 15, 1727, following a land grant in 1717. Early settlers, primarily from Sudbury and Marlborough, established an agricultural economy, notably with apple orchards, and by 1750, the town supported small industries including stores and taverns. Shrewsbury played a role as a staging area for Shays’ Rebellion in 1786 and later developed a leather industry, followed by gunsmithing and watch manufacturing. While its early industries eventually declined due to a lack of large waterpower sites and the delayed arrival of the railroad, Shrewsbury’s proximity to Worcester led to its growth as a suburb, with its population doubling between 1915 and 1940 due to streetcar suburb expansion. The town also saw the development of lakeside cottages and recreational areas around Lake Quinsigamond, though it was significantly impacted by the 1953 Worcester tornado.
Today, Shrewsbury is a vibrant town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, with a population of 38,325 as of the 2020 United States census. It operates under a New England representative town meeting system, led by a Town Manager and an elected five-member Select Board. Since the late 20th century, Shrewsbury has experienced a notable influx of immigration, particularly from South Asia. The town boasts modern amenities, including a new 42,000-square-foot public library that opened in 2016. Shrewsbury also preserves its rich history through several sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, such as the General Artemas Ward House and the Shrewsbury Historic District.
