Milford was first settled in the mid-17th century and officially incorporated in 1780. The town’s economy boomed in the 19th and early 20th centuries, driven by its boot and shoe manufacturing and, most famously, its Milford pink granite quarries. The high-quality granite was used in iconic buildings like the Boston Public Library and the original Pennsylvania Station in New York City. The quarries were a cornerstone of the local economy until about 1940, defining Milford as a significant industrial town in the region.

Today, Milford is a vibrant and diverse community with a population of over 30,000. While its industrial past is still visible in some of the historic architecture, its economic focus has shifted. The town has seen significant growth since the opening of Interstate 495, attracting major retailers and businesses. Healthcare has become a dominant sector, anchored by the Milford Regional Medical Center, which is a major employer. The town is known for its diverse population, with a substantial foreign-born community, including many residents from Brazil and Portugal. The median household income is a bit lower than the state average, and while housing values have risen, the town still offers a range of housing options, from single-family homes to multi-family units.
