Charlton past and Present

Charlton is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, founded in 1735 as a district separated from Oxford. It became a town in 1775 to support the Revolutionary War. It was named after Sir Francis Charlton, a British politician and diplomat. Charlton was originally inhabited by the Nipmuc tribe, who called it Chaubunagungamaug. The town was a farming community for most of its history, but also had some industries such as ironworks, sawmills, and tanneries.

Charlton is known for its historic buildings, such as the Rider Tavern, built in 1797 and visited by General Marquis de Lafayette in 1824; the #2 Schoolhouse, a one-room schoolhouse with a bell from 1719; and the Militia Lot, where Lafayette reviewed the troops. Today, Charlton has a population of about 13,000 and is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. It has a diverse economy, with sectors such as education, health care, manufacturing, and retail. It also has many recreational and cultural opportunities, such as the Buffumville Lake and Dam, the Charlton Arts and Activities Center, and the Charlton Historical Society1234
